Road Safety Program
Leighton Contractors in Queensland has developed the Leighton Contractors Road Safety Program to make a meaningful contribution to the reduction of road trauma.
With road trauma continuing to be one of Australia's major community issues, Leighton Contractors identified an opportunity to work with government, industry and the community to identify solutions to make our roads safer.
The aim of the program is to create safer drivers, safer roads and safer communities.
The program consists of the following three components:
- Leighton Contractors Youth Drive Safe Initiative
- Road safety research project partnership
- Road safety event sponsorship
1. Leighton Contractors Youth Drive Safe Initiative
The Leighton Contractors Youth Drive Safe Initiative aims to create safer drivers, safer roads and safer communities.
By equipping school-based learner drivers with the essential knowledge, practical skills and on-road experience, we hope to help ensure they have a long and safe driving future.
With road trauma continuing to be one of Australia’s major community health issues, Leighton Contractors, through the Youth Drive Safe Initiative as well as our broader road safety program, is helping to improve the safety of our roads and ultimately provide real and lasting benefits for the community.

2. Road safety research project partnership
Leighton Contractors has developed a strong relationship with the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) to seek their advice on developing our Road Safety Program. CARRS-Q is Queensland's leading road safety research body and was formed as a joint initiative of the Queensland University of Technology and Motor Accident Insurance Commission.
In 2009, Leighton Contractors collaborated with CARRS-Q to initiate a three-year research project aimed at identifying innovative solutions for key safety issues created when delivering large-scale road construction projects within existing road networks.
The project is designed to build on the substantial work that Leighton Contractors Northern Region has already undertaken in the area of construction worker and community safety.
More information will be available later in 2011.
3. Road safety event sponsorship
The Queensland Road Safety Awards have been held annually since 1999 and recognise excellence in road safety programs implemented through community, school, industry, business and state and local government initiatives.
The awards recognise the work of individuals and groups who have designed programs, innovations or initiatives dedicated to improving road safety, reducing road related trauma and encouraging greater commitment to this cause. Nominations for the awards are submitted by individuals and groups throughout Queensland.
Leighton Contractors Northern Region supported the 2009 Queensland Road Safety Awards as an Awards Partner and as Principal Sponsor of the inaugural post-awards community and business development workshop. The workshop was designed to build the capacity of award entrants, their organisations and their communities to develop and implement sustainable road safety initiatives.
The 2009 awards attracted nominations from all over Queensland with award recipients announced at a ceremony on 8 October 2009 by the Minister for Transport, The Honourable Rachel Nolan MP.
From 2010 onwards the awards will be held biennially, alternating with the Queensland Road Safety Awards Community Development Workshop.
The 2010 Queensland Road Safety Awards Community Development Workshop on Friday 15 October at Parliament House in Brisbane involved representatives from government, industry and the general community working together and sharing ideas, to facilitate networking and the workshopping of road safety issues, projects and solutions.
