Youth Drive Safe 5 Lesson Plan

The Leighton Contractors Youth Drive Safe Initiative offers you five hours of professional driving lessons that will give you more than just practical driving skills – while it is essential to teach these fundamental skills in each lesson there is an additional focus on how you learn as much as what you learn.

Our five lesson plan has been developed to suit all learner drivers no matter what your level of driving experience is. The plan ensures the Youth Drive Safe team of instructors consistently deliver lessons of the highest quality for every student who is participating no matter where you live.

Through the Youth Drive Safe 5 Lesson Plan, you will gain the:

5 Lesson Plan

Lesson 1:  Attitude and judgement

Starting with basic practical driving skills, you will also learn how your attitude influences what you see, what you do, how you react to changing road conditions and how you can take responsibility for training yourself to be a safe driver.

Lesson 2: Vehicle control skills

To get the basics right, you will learn vehicle control skills such as acceleration, signalling, positioning a vehicle on the road and in lanes, overtaking safely and, importantly, observing road conditions.

Lesson 3: Safe driving strategies

You will learn how to identify hazards and respond correctly, the importance of safe driving distances, coping with different situations and making the right decisions at the right time.

Lesson 4: Eco-driving

You will get advice on driving in an environmentally responsible way such as driving and braking smoothly, planning efficient journeys, vehicle maintenance and how to buy ‘green’.

Lesson 5: Learner’s choice

You get to choose - spend more time on specific vehicle manoeuvres, get more experience in peak traffic times or even do a motorway or highway drive.

All of the lessons draw on the national keys2drive learning approach (a program that helps new drivers prepare for the realities of P plate driving) and have been developed after consultation with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Learner Driver Starter Kit

At your first lesson your driving instructor will give you a new cover folder for your Logbook and a postcard summing up what you will learn in each lesson.

You can use your cover folder to keep your logbook safe as well as store any notes or information about driving in one easy to find place. You will also find the phone number for your driving school on the back of your logbook cover.

Don‘t forget to take your logbook to each lesson so your instructor can help you fill it in and add their signature.
